SMITHFIELD SOCIAL AUCTION HOUSE
Smithfield Social Auction House brings life back to the Victorian Smithfield Markets. The existing iron framed structure was once a thriving food market which since the 1980s has been left to deteriorate and decay. Its historic nature has led to the site being surrounded by contentious development which has often been rejected due to its insensitive respect of the existing architecture.
My proposed development seeks to develop the markets in a sensitive manner, emphasising the historical importance of the site. The proposed development consists of residential dwellings of the perimeter with an internal iron structure within which consists of an auction house, markets, shops and a beer house. At basement level, within the existing vaults of the Victorian Market, sits the factory for which the goods for all the internal services are stored and distributed.
